10 Songs, the Soundtrack of my Life...

10 Songs that are Near and Dear to my Heart in No Particular Order.

(Thanks Kari, for the great idea.)

1. Ride On by ACDC: This was one of the songs Ryan and I listened to when we first started dating.

2. Come as You Are by Nirvana: This little ditty, and truthfully the entire Nevermind album really could be a soundtrack to my last year in high school, when he and I first started dating.

3. Rock the Kasbah by the Clash: This song and (and entire album too) is one of my very, very, very, favorites. Mick Jones and Joe Strummer are an unbeatable combination; they are the fathers of modern punk rock.

4. Black No. 1 by Type O Negative: This song reminds me of the time just before and just after moving from the small town to the “big city”. Plus goth music kicked ass.

5. Stagger Lee/ Where the Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave: This is a tie, mostly because the two songs are right next to each other on the album. Stagger Lee is the rudest, crudest song ever, where Wild Roses is the sweetest most twisted love song ever. It really personifies my unusual music tastes.

6. Chan Chan by the Buena Vista Social Club: My friends Augustino and Monica gave me a copy of this album right before Aurora was born. After I got home from the hospital, I put this CD on, and danced around with her in my arms in the living room of our little house on Estrella.

7. The King without a Crown by Matisyahu: This man has the most compelling voice I have ever heard. He is amazing. I think of Ryan when I hear his music.

8. Soul Meets Body by Death Cab for Cutie: This song reminds me of my feelings for my family. I think that Astrid and I have sat around or driven around a couple of hundred times listening to this song.

9. Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole: I heard this one day on the radio for the first time. I nearly had to pull over because I started to cry. This man had the most beautiful voice. I play it for my girls and we sing together until our voices crack with emotion.

10. Junco Partner by Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros: “TAKE A WALK!!” This song cracks me up. Aurora memorized the lyrics and can sing it at the top of her lungs in her sweet little voice:

Down the road came a Junco Partner
Boy, he was loaded as can be
He was knocked out, knocked out loaded
He was a'wobblin' all over the street

Singing 6 months ain't no sentence
Yeah, and one year ain't no time
I was born in Angola
Serving 14 to 99

Well I wish I had me one million dollars
Oh, one million to call my own
I would raise me, and say, "grow for me baby"
Raise me a tobacco farm

Take a walk, Take a walk, Junco Partner

Well, when I had me a great deal of money
Yeah, I had mighty good things all over town
Now I ain't got no more money
All of my good friends they're putting me down

So now I gotta pawn my ratchet and pistol
Yeah I'm gonna pawn my watch and chain
I would have pawned my sweet Gabriella
But the smart girl she wouldn't sign her name

(repeat first verse twice)

Well I'm down, yes I'm getting thirsty
Pour me out a good beer, when I'm dry
Just, just give me whisky, when I'm thirsty
Give me headstone when I die.

Down the road.

I love "I Will Follow You into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie.
And "Rock the Kasbah"
What a great list - I found my self nodding and going "oh yeah - I like that one" to a lot of your songs.
