Its groundhogs day! According to German/English tradition, if the hibernating animal comes out on Feb. 2, which is on the ancient Christian holiday of Candlemas, and sees its shadow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter. Presumably, it is afraid of its shadow, and it scurries back into its burrow to sleep another month and a half. If no shadow is seen, then winter is over and spring shall start soon. The Pilgrims celebrated this holiday with hedgehogs back in Jolly ol England. But once in the New World, they had to use groundhogs instead, being that the States are sorely lacking hedgehogs.
I should totally go on Jepoardy.
